Scientists have found a new way to recycle water they have designed a plant filtration system that they claim would let one drink one’s shower water.
All one needs to do is to put plants in the bottom of the shower, they say. Scientists from Ecole Nationale Supirieure de Creation Industrielle in France say, after one has washed in the special eco-shower the water passes down into a series of filters and is treated by plants such as reeds and rushes growing around your feet.
“These plants have been proven to be able to remove shampoo chemicals. Using a natural filtering principle, the bathroom becomes a mini-eco-system by recycling and regenerating the wastewater,” the researchers said.

World Hypertension Day to be observed on 17th May

"Healthy Weight-Healthy Blood Pressure" is the theme for this year

This year World Hypertension League (WHL) has chosen "Healthy Weight-Healthy Blood Pressure" as the theme for World Hypertension Day 2010. Keeping in mind that more than 1 Billion adults worldwide are overweight and over 300 million of them are obese, the WHL intends to bring about public awareness of obesity and its effects on hypertension.

As, weight has either direct or indirect effect on heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes. The objective of the World Hypertension Day is to promote the detection, control and prevention of arterial hypertension in populations. This the day for education about high blood pressure which is the biggest single cause of death worldwide through strokes, heart attacks and kidney diseases.

Avoid Eating Chicken...

A lady recently had a growth in her womb and she underwent an operation to remove the cyst. The cyst removed was filled with a dark colored blood. She thought that she would be recovered after The surgery but She was terribly wrong. .A relapse occurred just a few months later. Distressed, she rushed down to her gynecologist for a consultation.
During her consultation, her doctor asked her a Question that puzzled her. He ask if she was a frequent consumer of chicken and she replied yes wondering as to how, he knew of her eating habits. You see, the truth is in this modern day and age; Chickens are injected with steroids to accelerate their growth so that the needs of this society can be met. This need is none other than the need for food. Chickens that are injected with steroids are usually given the shot at the neck or the wings. Therefore, it is in these places that the highest concentration of steroids exists. These steroids have terrifying effects on the body as it accelerates growth. It has an even more dangerous effect in the presence of female and children hormones, this leads to being more prone to the growth of a cyst in the womb.

Walking burns more fat than running
Researchers have found that low-intensity exercise may burn more fat than high-intensity activities when it comes to shedding pounds.
The findings were reported in the International Journal of Sports Medicine.
The research team, led by Dr. Vassilis Mougios of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, randomly assigned 14 normal-weight and overweight women to one of two groups: one that exercised on a treadmill at a moderate pace, four times a week; and one that worked out at a more vigorous clip, also four times per week. The two group were placed on a three-month exercise regimen.
The researchers set time period for the workouts so that women in both groups would burn 370 calories each time.
After three months, exercisers in both groups were thinner, but the lower-intensity group lost more weight -- about 7 pounds, on average, compared with 4 pounds in the high-intensity group.
Though women in the high-intensity group shed fewer pounds, they did retain more muscle mass than those who worked out more moderately, the researchers note.
The researchers recommended that to get the greatest health and fitness benefits, people should strive for a mix of moderate and vigorous cardiovascular exercise, as well as strength training.
There is no such thing as one "magic exercise," said lead study author Dr. Vassilis Mougios of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.

Warning Signs of a Heart Attack

Most heart attacks aren't like in the movies - sudden and intense. Usually, they start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are the most common signs of a heart attack or heart disease that could lead to one.

Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Fatigue or a vague sense of being ill without explanation, especially among women.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath, which women in particular may have without chest discomfort.

Other signs: breaking out in a cold sweat, indigestion, nausea or lightheadedness.

What You Need To Know?

Essential information about High Blood Pressure

What is high blood pressure?
When the heart beats, blood is forced through the arteries and it "pushes out" against the walls of the arteries. This "pushing out" is known as blood pressure. Blood pressure is stated as two numbers: systolic and diastolic pressures. These two numbers are displayed one above the other like this: 120/78.The systolic pressure is measured when the heart beats (when it is pumping blood). This is when the blood pressure is highest. The blood pressure falls when the heart is between beats (at rest). This is the diastolic pressure. As a general rule, a person is considered to have high blood pressure when it is 140/90 or higher. Be aware that this is only a rule of thumb and you should have your blood pressure checked by a physician on a regular basis. In a nutshell, high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is when the blood pressure is higher than normal.
Symptoms of high blood pressure
There are no reliable, recognizable symptoms of high blood pressure. It is quite possible to have high blood pressure for years and never even know it! This is why high blood pressure is often referred to as "the silent killer".
What causes high blood pressure?
In the vast majority of high blood pressure cases, the cause cannot be determined. In the rare cases where the cause is known, they usually include one or more of the following: an abnormal kidney a structural abnormality of the aorta narrowing of one or more arteries
How can high blood pressure be controlled?
There are several things that can be done to help control high blood pressure. These include:

  • Lose weight. Excess fat has been linked to high blood pressure.

  • Eat a well-balanced, low sodium diet.

  • Get regular exercise (see your doctor first!).

  • Prescription medications (if your doctor recommends them).

  • Any other steps that may be suggested by your doctor.

Conclusion
High blood pressure is a very serious disorder that must be controlled in order to enjoy a long, healthy life. Be sure to live a generally healthy lifestyle and have your blood pressure checked regularly.

Giving coffee to babies won't keep them awake as in case of adults, in fact the hot beverage would have a long-lasting and detrimental effect on little ones' sleep and breathing patterns in adulthood, says a new study.
Breathing problems are the leading causes of hospitalization and death in premature babies. These babies are therefore often given caffeine because of its qualities as a respiratory stimulant. Up till now, the long-term effects of this treatment in humans have not been examined. However, in the Journal of Physiology, Gaspard Montandon and colleagues showed that the use of caffeine in neonates can cause serious alterations in the sleeping patterns of adult rats as a result of its effect on the developing respiratory system. Sleep abnormality is a significant indicator for ill health and reduced life span. When the caffeine-treated rats reached adulthood, their sleeping time was reduced, the length of time they took to reach the first stage of sleep was increased, and their non-REM sleep was fragmented. Breathing at rest was higher than in rats not treated with caffeine.

In his review of the study, F1000 Faculty Member James Duffin of the University of Toronto says the results "raise concerns about the long-term consequences of neonatal caffeine administration on brain development and behaviour."

Historically research has focused on men. As one example, women are under-represented in major clinical trials for cancers that affect both sexes, a new study found. Researchers say several factors could be responsible, from childcare issues to reluctance by researchers to expose women of childbearing age to trial drugs and treatments. In other areas where research into women's medical problems is lacking, the issue is not just about sexism. Women's hormone fluctuations are, well, complicated and can confound basic findings. But in recent years, women have been getting increased attention. Still, much misinformation about the female body circulates in mainstream consciousness.

Myth: Antibiotics make birth control pills unreliable.

"Many physicians even believe this," Carroll said. Alone, birth control pills fail about one percent of the time. And that failure rate is unchanged when taken with the vast majority of antibiotics, Carroll said. A possible exception is rifampin, the antibiotic prescribed for tuberculosis. Rifampin does lower pregnancy-protecting hormone levels induced by birth control pills, but whether the effect is large enough to increase pregnancy risk is unclear. Carroll thinks rifampin research spurred the antibiotic/birth control rumor. "Sometimes people say things and they just take off," he said.

Myth: A doctor can tell if a woman is a virgin.
Even when using 10-fold magnification, doctors can not accurately sort virgins from the sexually-active, several studies have reported. It is not as simple as looking for a hole in the hymen because, well, there is always a hole in the hymen. "Some people think the hymen seals off the vagina [until virginity is lost], but that is just not true," said Dr. Rachel Vreeman of Indiana University and Carroll's co-author of "Don't Swallow Your Gum." In the rare cases when it is sealed, period blood builds in the uterus and causes severe medical problems, she said.

Myth: Women and men need equal sleep.
Tossing and turning not only causes women more psychological distress, it also raises their insulin and inflammation levels -- risk factors for compromised health, found a 2008 study of 210 people led by Edward Suarez at Duke University. A study of more than 6,000 participants, led by researchers at the University of Warwick in 2007, found that women who slept five or less hours a night were twice as likely to suffer from hypertension than women who slept for seven or more hours. Among men, there was no such relationship. Sleeping Beauty may be better off waking up on her own watch.

Myth: A women can't get pregnant during her period.

While a woman is unlikely to conceive during menstruation, "nothing, when it comes to pregnancy, is impossible," said Aaron Carroll of Indiana University and co-author of "Don't Swallow Your Gum: Myths, Half-truths and Outright Lies About Your Body and Health" (St. Martin's Griffin, 2009). Once inside a woman, sperm can wait for an egg for up to a week. Ovulation can occur soon after, or even during, the bleeding phase of a woman's menstrual cycle, giving patient sperm the chance to get lucky. The timing method of birth control doesn't work well, Carroll said, agreeing that couples who practice it are often called: parents.

Myth: Menopause causes sex drive to nosedive.
The Change is not necessarily one that happens in the bedroom. A comprehensive survey of sexual habits in the United States, completed by Edward Laumann and colleagues in 1994, found that roughly half of women in their fifties have sex several times a month. While hot flashes and other discomforts may make a women temporarily not in the mood, there is not a direct link between menopause and sexual desire, Vreeman said. So if you are entering the Big M, there is no reason to say good-bye to the Big O.

contd....., deaths of a significant number of mothers and their newborn children each year.
The impact that access to safe blood can have on health outcomes for pregnant women with severe bleeding is illustrated by Malawi. In 2003, the country established the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service. In 2005, the maternal mortality rate due to severe blood loss had fallen by more than 50% donation by voluntary unpaid blood donors.
The 2004 data reveal some tangible improvements since 2001-2002, but family/replacement donors and paid donors still remain a significant source of blood for transfusion in many developing and transitional countries.

  • A total of 60 countries reported an increase in the percentage of blood donated by voluntary unpaid blood donors and a further 41 countries maintained the same level; 37 countries showed a decline in the percentage of blood donations from unpaid voluntary blood donors.

  • In 2002, 39 countries had achieved 100% unpaid voluntary blood donation, of which five were developing countries. By 2004, this had risen to 50 countries. Out of the 11 new countries that achieved this, three were least developed countries.

  • Ministries of health in three countries reported very significant strides in achieving 100% voluntary unpaid donation. These are Central African Republic (where the proportion increased from 25% to 100%), Egypt (from 15% to 100%) and Uruguay (28% to 100%).

  • More and more countries are moving towards voluntary blood donation. In 2002, 63 countries were collecting less than 25% of their blood from voluntary unpaid donors; by 2004, this had fallen to 46 countries.

  • Particularly striking was the increase from 25% to 47% in the proportion of total donations collected from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors in developing and transitional countries.

  • The number of units donated in transitional countries has increased from 29 million in 2002 to 36 million in 2004.

  • 92% of donations in developed countries are from voluntary unpaid donors as compared to about 67% in developing and transitional countries. This means that family/replacement donors still remain a significant source of blood for transfusion in low HDI and medium HDI countries.

  • More than 2.2 million units were still collected from paid blood donors in 2004 in which the level is the same as compared to the last survey. The majority of these (94%) were collected in medium HDI countries.

Blood is a Liquid Tissue:
Almost all tissues are solid however blood is liquid and comprised of many important ingredients: Heart is at the heart of its fast circulation through millions of miles in uncountable capillaries brining all what is required to sustain the life at cell level and beyond. It has many currents and rows of gases, solids and liquid which do not mix up. It is hyper-dynamic. Gushing, moving, giving, receiving, storing, balancing, cooling, heating, transferring, nurturing, breathing, beautiful red hot blood which makes engine and sprit of our lives keep going. See these phrases from Surah Ar-Rehman and apply to Blood:

  • Moving two rows side by side, in between there is partition which they can’t transgress. And which bounties and powers of your Lord can you deny.

  • Emerge from therein Lu Lu & Marjan And which bounties and powers of your Lord can you deny.

  • And for Him are the ships like mountains And which bounties and powers of your Lord can you deny.

This is more than three dimension of blood. Numerous rows side by side but not interfering and transgressing, each doing its job perfectly well! Numerous Lu Lu & Marjan present in the blood and many things floating in like ships.

Ingredients of Blood:
Blood is comprised of cells and plasma; of course both contain gases in various forms. The Cells of blood are red, white and platelets each with zillions of functions. Without going in any details we will here briefly mention their functions:

Cells:

  • Red Cells: Primary function to carry oxygen to the tissues and carry back carbon dioxide thus keeping flame of our life burning and shining at molecular, cell and tissue levels

  • White Blood Cells: Primary Function to defend against infections

  • Platelets: To help in clotting of blood

Plasma:
The liquid portion of the blood is no less important than the cells. It contains hundreds of different chemicals which are required for different essential functions. This can be separated from the blood and kept frozen at very low temperature. It is then issued as Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP). At times even the subcomponents of plasma is separated e.g. cryoprecipitate of Factor VIII of blood and given to the hemophilic patients who lack this very important clotting factor.

The Life Span of Blood is Short One:
Not unlike skin, hair, nails etc, our tissues are gradually replaced. It is a superb management system of Allah Ta’lah where every thing is precisely recorded and provided. The life span of various components of our blood varies. The red blood cells usually last for 4 months and then they are destroyed and new ones are created. The process is happening all the time i.e. at any given time billions of red cells are being destroyed and billions and new ones are replacing them. The body’s inventory system is superb, the lost blood is meticulously and accurately replaced Al-Hamdolillah

Blood Groups:
We can’t readily give blood to each other without prior testing as the red cells of our blood carry very powerful antigen which when exposed to the ocean of plasma of the recipient may encounter pre-formed powerful antibodies which may destroy our red cells. Luckily there are few blood groups which would react so strongly that not only the donor’s red cells would be destroyed but also the life of the recipient may be in danger. In order to avoid this, blood of the donor is grouped so that recipient receives only the blood which is not going to react. In addition to grouping, recipient and donor’s blood is mixed so that any reaction can be seen before transfusing the blood. Even then patient or his/her relatives are cautioned that if patient feels uncomfortable or feel any untoward effect or the nurse or doctor or any attendant see any unusual thing such as pain, drop in blood pressure, excessive sweating etc. the blood transfusion must be stopped and doctor be informed.

Blood Donation is not risky:
Blood banks interview you and if you are suffering from any illness or donating a blood could be dangerous for you or for the recipient, then the blood must not be drawn. Actually the donor must be informed about his/her illness so that he/she can immediately start his/her treatment. At the same time his/her blood component must not be transfused. World wide the Blood Banks routinely screen for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Some countries following WHO guidelines are also doing the screening for syphilis. In Pakistan however the incidence of syphilis is Al-Hamdolillah so low that it is generally not screened. After donation of the blood, the donor is required to keep lying or sitting for some time and must not stand up suddenly as in some individuals there is momentarily low blood pressure and person may feel little dizzy. This however corrects itself in few minutes

Preventive Measures in Blood Banking :

  • Taking interview of the potential donors so that unfit donors are not subjected to bloodletting. Both donors and recipients are focused and protected.

  • Blood is screened for Hepatitis B, C and HIV and in those countries where venereal diseases are common, blood for syphilis is also carried out.

  • Many Blood Banks do the screening for above mentioned diseases after the blood is collected. However at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) we have begun double screening to assure safety to both the donor and the recipients. If blood turns out to be positive for the infections, we simply do not subject the potential donor to bloodletting. As collecting his blood, storing, making components from his blood and then destroying all these after it turns out to be positive is tedious job and has many lacunae and thus could lead to corrupt practice of selling the contaminated blood and its components. In countries where law & order situation is not perfect, contaminated syringes and needles along with infectious blood could be easily sold We at PIMS inform the potential donor about his/her disease so that he/she may begin his/her treatment and at the same time may not lead to spread of the diseases to the other contacts. We nonetheless double checking after the blood is collected and if the blood in some cases who escaped initial screening turns out to be positive we immediately reject that blood and all its components and autoclave all of these components through autoclaving.

  • Blood is transplanted in the recipient and at times recipient’s body may not accept it and at other rare times some cells in the donors’ cells may attack the recipients’ tissues. However these complications are quite rare and these rare risks can be taken if there is a genuine need for blood transfusion. The safer and the healthier the donated blood, the lesser the risks of infectious disease. The better the Blood Bank’s moral and ethical values and competence and vigilance, the lesser the chances of issuing the wrong blood in terms of grouping etc. The relatives and the hospital nurses and doctors also bear some responsibility; if any untoward reaction is noted, the transfusion must stop immediately and sample of the patient’s blood and urine along with the blood bag must be sent back to the blood bag for proper inquiry and investigations.

When There is No Need for Blood Transfusion:
Under following condition perhaps generally (With few exceptions) there is no genuine need for Blood Transfusion:

  • If the patient’s hemoglobin is over 8 gm/dl

  • If the patient’s hemoglobin can be maintained over 8 gm/dl during surgery

  • In elective Surgeries where patient may donate his/her own blood about a month prior to Surgery and replenish the deficit through healthy diet and food supplements to facilitate accelerated new red blood cell formation

  • If only order for one unit of blood is issued meaning perhaps there is no serious shortage of blood in the body

When Blood Becomes Life Saving:

  • Accidents leading to severe loss of blood

  • Surgeries where lot of blood is lost

  • When our blood manufacturing factories (Bone Marrow) are diseased e.g. due to infection (e.g. TB), cancer, fibrosis etc.

  • Rapid destruction of blood within body due to malformed red blood cells or extrinsic factors causing destruction of red cells e.g. autoimmune factors, infections etc. etc.

  • During or after pregnancy when some vessels are torn

  • Excessive bleeding due to lack of blood clotting (Many factors)

There should be simply no dearth of ample blood supply in the hospital so that even the worst case of bleeding could be given adequate blood at fast speed. Like skin, nails and hair our blood is decayed and new one is produced all the time. Hence a blood which would any way be dead and replaced in less than four months, could be donated which is only a fraction of the total blood. Our body will automatically increase the rate of synthesis of new blood thus replenishing the lost blood in few days thanks to superb inventory and reporting and responding system made by Allah Ta’lah in our body.

Types of Blood Donations:
Many types of blood donation are prevalent including the following:

  • Selling of blood: Many drug addicts are willing to sell their blood despite the fact they have very low hemoglobin.

  • Forced transfusions where people seeking driving license etc. are made to donate the blood otherwise they would not get the license

  • Replacement Blood Transfusion where patient himself/herself is required to arrange donor

  • Voluntary Blood Donation where people with a sense of help to others and saving precious lives, come up themselves and donate blood regularly. Men can easily donate blood every four months while women every six months. This is the best form of donation which has been shown to be beneficial for all. It has reduced the incidence of transmittance of infectious diseases in the community.

Hazards of Non Voluntary Blood Donations:

  • Stress on patients at worst time. When the relatives and friends are trying to save patient’s life, they are also forced to come up with some donors.

  • At times it is difficult to arrange donors, which leads to selling and buying of the blood and this becomes a treat for corruption mafia which uses the excuses that blood is not available although blood collected but not used for the patients is usually available.

  • The corrupt mafia may even possibly sell the contaminated blood and its components which may result in injection of infected blood to the recipient causing disastrous results for the recipient as well as his/her family

  • Drug addicts selling their substandard and infectious blood

  • Spread of deadly diseases in the community. It has been shown by many studies that with adoption of voluntary blood donation, the incidence of hepatitis had gone down in the society

Saving blood:
There are many ways where blood can be saved and thus blood transfusion may be averted all together. Following measures may be effective at times:

  • Preventing bleedings e.g. in hemorrhoids, varicose veins in cirrhosis of liver

  • Saving blood in surgery and reusing it

  • Donating one’s own blood for planned surgery and keeping it safe in the Blood bank; in the mean time body will compensate for the lost blood by making more blood.

The society, the Government and the Hospitals all have to play key role in educating people about harmlessness of donating blood, the benefits of the blood donation to the recipient, to the society and to the donor him/herself. Pakistan has proven to be a great nation at the time of last earthquake where thousands lined up for voluntary blood donation. However there is a need to sustain and maintain that sprit throughout the year. We must develop and nurture community sense and be helping and caring people. It is required that society be made healthy at all levels and in all spheres, may that be the institution of Justice, Good Governance and right beliefs and values or may that be the right and healthy attitude toward saving lives and helping other. We must understand that in the game of cheating, deceiving, lethargy and corruption there is no winner, everyone is looser. On the other hand if we help each other selflessly, a positive and healthy culture would grow and benefit all. Let’s not wait for another Earthquake or other disaster, let us develop and sustain our collective good and strong conscience to help others. We hope that you will not only register as potential blood donor but also be part of this campaign so that whenever anyone needs this precious gift of life, it is available readily without cost and in the most healthy and reliable form.

At Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad, we are observing the Week of Voluntary Blood Donors (7th-14th June). You are requested to enroll your name as a Proud Voluntary Blood Donor. We will do free blood grouping and issue you a card and a badge. Please be part of our campaign. We would like teachers and others Institute heads to motivate the students and others to come up for this noble cause. If you have any questions please call Dr. Lubna Naseem, In-Charge Blood Transfusion Services or myself at 9260189 or 9261272. We will be more than happy to help you.
