Jeevey Pakistan: Could you briefly tell us about Karachi Press Club?
Secretary Press Club Mr. A. H. Khanzada: Karachi Press Club was established in December 1958 in the same building . At that time the senior contributor to this effort were Mr. Jalil, Mr. Iqbal, Tahir Mirza, Babu sab, Habib chabra, and many other whom I am not able to recall with their names at the moment but they are the ones who founded this organization which is basically the journalists community's own organization. Since its inception there was not a single year or time that when its election could not took place in time means since that long time regularly its election takes place. Except in 2007 cause of Benazir Bhutto's killing the elections of Karachi Press Club took place one week later than the decided date.
Another important thing of this process is that
as soon as the election committee announce the new selections in the
result of the election the same time the newly elected member become
effective for their responsibilities and working and at the same time
the previously elected people become ineffective.
Jeevey Pakistan: What is composition of the Governing Body?
Secretary Press Club : There are basically twelve members of the governing body out of which seven are the members while five are the designated ones.
Jeevey Pakistan: What are these designations?
Secretary Press Club : These are President, Vice president, Treasurer, Secretary, Joint Secretary.
Jeevey Pakistan: For how many times a person can be selected ?
Secretary Press Club : If some body is elected for two times then he is not eligible for the third time according to constitution of the Karachi Press Club.
Jeevey Pakistan: How many members Karachi Press Club have right now ?
Secretary Press Club : well I am very pleased to share that this is over One thousand number now.
Jeevey Pakistan: What is the criteria of membership of Karachi Press Club ?
Secretary Press Club : One should have at least three years of experience of journalism and this profession would have been his sole source of economy/Income. He can apply for the membership of Karachi Press Club.
Jeevey Pakistan: Come back to Election topic. You said that maximum time is two time but we listened that there were many people who been elected for many times. what would you say ?
Secretary Press Club : yes this right Abdul Hamid saab remained for 4 years in initial times but then it was decided that the maximum time to be elected is two time in consecutive case. Otherwise there are many examples that people been elected for many times but in different time frames.
Jeevey Pakistan: what are the remarks of leaders of Pakistan of different times ?
Secretary Press Club :well you see
Karachi Press Club is been a plate for war survival of democratic
political environment and one who would listen no where came to this
plate form and raised his voice. Any way ......Gen.Zia Ul Haq said that
this is the enemy territory. Habib Jalib always felt this place as his
home.
Jeevey Pakistan: Lets discuss your financials please let us know about this aspect to little bit ?
Secretary Press Club: well our fiscal year is Jan to Dec while before it was June to May along with the Pakistan fiscal year but then it was changed. As far as the budget is concerned it is right now 80 Lacks. Karachi Press Club also plan to work on its own some time like from Jan to March we totally depended on our self. But yes we do get grants form different sources too.
