A person who is a Thalassemia minor lives a normal life with no significant health problem except in few conditions like pregnancy, severe infection.
Thalassemia Major
Very difficult disease to treat, life long medical care, and survival is not possible without regular blood transfusion. Average life expectancy in Pakistan for Thalassemia major is 10yrs and most of them die at the age of 10 yrs. Majority of these Thalassemia children belongs to low socio-economic area, with no medical coverage so their life become more difficult. In Pakistan the only hope for these innocent children is their treatment by supported by different NGO, S.But still the fund is inadequate to give complete support.
Thalassemia Treatment for Thalassemia major
Thalassemia major needs a regular blood transfusion, as the survival is not possible without this type of therapy. Due to regular transfusion there is excess of iron that gets deposited in the body and if we don't remove this iron leads to deposition of this iron in different organs of the body and ultimately the child suffers with multiple problems at very young age. To remove this iron a drug known as desferol is used which the patient takes 5 days a week.
Prevention of this disease
Thalassemia is an inherited disorder. Whenever two Thalassemia minor have a child there are 25% chances of Thalassemia major child, 50% chance of Thalassemia minor child and 25% chances of a normal. In families where the carries are common should avoid inter-relative marriages as this is an inherited disorder and runs in the family.
Permanent treatment of Thalassemia
Bone marrow transplant is the only hope for these children by providing the matched donor is available. The cost is too much so that most of the families living in Pakistan with limited resources with no medical package cannot afford this type of treatment so the ultimate answer is prevention.
