Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani called on President Asif Ali Zardari at
Aiwan-E-Sadr Islamabad.
President Barack Obama has
authorized 33 million dollar in assistance to help alleviate
sufferings of Pakistanis displaced by unprecedented
flooding.
The money will come
from the United States emergency refugees and migration
assistance fund. The total U.S. assistance so far includes
150 million dollars for relief and rescue operations while
50 million dollars - drawn from the Kerry-Lugar-Berman aid
package - are to be used to assist early recovery effort.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has
announced that he had set up a council to pursue peace talks
with the Taliban.
A statement from Karzai's office said the formation of the
high peace council was "a significant step towards peace
talks. Karzai's plan to create the high peace council was
approved in June at a "peace Jirga" in Kabul attended by
community, tribal, religious and political leaders from
across the country.

has said a meeting of the council of common interests has been summoned
on Monday to finalize rehabilitation and reconstruction policy with the
consultation of federating units.
Pakistan take on England

World Bank, IMF
agree to give $550m
WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank
have agreed to jointly provide more aid to flood-hit Pakistan
during the current fiscal year but both also insisted that the
country needed to continue its economic reforms, officials said
on Thursday.
In Sindh, flood water is
heading towards tehsil Shah Bandar in Thatta district.
Indus highway was
submerged by flood water after a breach in Tori and water has
now entered Khairpur Nathan Shah in Dadu district. The residents
of Khairpur Nathan shah have been directed to move to safer
places. All efforts are being made to protect Johi and Meher.
Pakistan army and navy are assisting the district
administrations in Thattaha and Dadu to carry out the rescue and
relief operation. Navy helicopters and boats are busy in
rescuing the stranded peoples.
The National Assembly unanimously adopted a
resolution calling for strengthening democracy, abolishing feudal system
and corruption from the country.
The house began discussion on the flood situation
in the country. Opening the debate, leader of the opposition Ch Nisar
Ali Khan critised the statement of MQM leader Altaf Hussain. He said the
system could only be changed through parliament. To face the challenges
posed by floods, we will have to be united. MQM parliamentary leader Dr
Farooq Sattar stressed the need for national unity. He demanded judicial
probe into breaking bunds at various places in Punjab and Sindh. Khawaja
Saad Rafiq of PML-N said the federal government should come up with a
comprehensive plan for flood affectees in consultation with the
provinces. Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat spoke for transparency in flood
relief funds. Raza Hayat Hiraj stressed for timely building of dams to
avoid disasters. Jamashed Dasti of PPP demanded setting up of a
parliamentary commission to fix responsibility for the disaster. Amir
Muqaam of PML Q suggested to utilise ERRA more effectively.
